Total assets

Everything the company owns — buildings, machinery, stock, receivables and cash.

Total assets is the sum of the company's assets on the last day of the accounting period. It splits into non-current assets (buildings, machinery, licences, holdings in other companies) and current assets (stock, receivables, cash).

On the balance sheet, assets always equal equity plus liabilities. Put another way: everything a company owns is either funded from its own resources or owed to someone.

Large assets do not mean a wealthy company. A manufacturer with a plant and machinery has them high by nature; a software company on the same revenue may have a fraction of them.
