Liabilities

Everything the company owes — suppliers, banks, employees and the state.

Liabilities cover long- and short-term payables, bank loans, provisions and accruals. They are every claim on the company held by someone other than its owners.

High liabilities are not automatically bad — most companies would not grow without borrowing. What matters is whether the company can service them: whether current assets cover short-term liabilities, and whether profit covers the repayments.

If liabilities exceed total assets, the company has negative equity.

Where this figure comes from

Balance sheet, liabilities side. The condensed and full templates put this on different rows, which is why we map it by row number rather than by label text.
