Operating revenue

What a company earned from its ordinary business during the accounting period, before any costs are taken off.

Operating revenue is a company's total income from ordinary trading: sales of goods, sales of its own products and services, and other operating income. It excludes financial income such as interest or exchange-rate gains.

It is the most common measure of company size and the figure rankings are built on. Read it carefully, though: high revenue says nothing about whether a company is profitable. A trading company turning over tens of millions can earn less than a small consultancy.

Revenue is reported for an accounting period. For most companies that matches the calendar year, but it need not — a company may run a financial year offset from it.
